The big dream for Attwoods Wines is becoming reality after we planted a 1ha Pinot Noir vineyard at our property on Attwoods Road, Scotsburn, just south of Ballarat. Planting Pinot noir MV6, 777 and Pommard vines at a density of 10,000 vines a hectare, this is a true close-planted vineyard. The site is 500m above sea level on 480 million year old Ordovision, quartz rich, gold mining soil, with one of the coldest climates in Victoria.
The vines are planted 1.2m by 85cm, looking for low yields and high quality. It's early days, and there are certainly challenges to face with this labour intensive site but we are optimistic and very excited about the first harvest in 2019.
We are lucky enough to be managing a 25 year old Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyard in Garibaldi, just 10kms from Buninyong, near Scotsburn. This small site is producing high quality fruit, having been under the love and attention of a local family for many years. We're excited to have made our first wines from this vineyard in 2016, making a single vineyard Pinot and Chardonnay, released in 2017.
